Meet our jewellery stallholder ‘Air to my Earth’ by Jamie Shipton, for our Mister Mode Fashion Night Market 10th December.
Air To My Earth
Jamie-Maree Shipton
Student at University of Melbourne (but being creative is my full time job)
Mister Mode asks First of all, welcome to Mister Mode! Tell us how Air To My Earth started?
My jewellery designs started naturally from a childhood obsession with nature, minerals, crystals and gemstones. I collected these treasures from a young age; I would trawl through stalls at markets selling raw gemstones for the perfect one to add to my collection,
Then as I got older I started becoming really interested in the healing capabilities of my crystals and began reading up on them. In all the books I was reading there were pictures of gemstones being worn as jewellery, so I decided to give it a shot and turn my collection into something I could carry with me everywhere. I was lucky enough to have an artist for a mother so at all hours day and night I began to use wire and blank rings to create my pieces.
Mister Mode asks When was the brand Air To My Earth created?
When I was around 18 there was a brief use of raw quartz and gemstones in designers collections and seeing this kind of jewellery in magazines and on runways made me aware that what I was doing could actually appeal to other people. It was then that I started to think about my designs seriously, about quality and where I was sourcing my materials from. At first I just gave my pieces away as gifts, and then I was getting orders and requests for more. I began making an excess of cuffs, earrings, rings, necklaces and taking photos of them. I couldn’t stop my mind from thinking of new designs, making my jewellery was food to my creative soul.
And this is where the name Air To My Earth came from. Making jewellery was the stars to my night, the sun to my moon, without it there was no me, being creative is in the air that I breath, thus it’s the air to my earth. With my brand name I then established a Facebook page where I could network with people from all over and really begin to establish myself as a professional creator.
Mister Mode asks Where do you get your inspiration from when creating your jewellery?
Most of my inspiration is from nature. I’m currently trying to grow my own crystals (it’s not as hard as you think) and the way the crystals naturally grow into these amazing shapes and forms really inspires me. I try to make all my pieces reflect this sense of movement and shape. Travel also plays a large role in inspiring me.
Mister Mode asks What outfit or style of look do you think would suit best with Air To My Earth?
Personally I think anyone could pull them off. I tend to dress for my mood and more often than not I can fit one of my pieces into my outfit. If I choose a minimalist style I can just wear one statement Air To My Earth Piece, or if I’m in a raw all black day I might wear a choker and layer alot of rings. I guess I do love Abby Lee Kershews style-she knows how to pull of a crystal choker.
Mister Mode asks Tell us more about Jamie, what do you do aside from Air To My Earth?
I’m a student at the University of Melbourne; I study a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media and Communications and also Asian Studies. I also do a diploma of Languages in Indonesian. It’s full on! Aside from the compulsory study I also do alot of writing for the University Magazine Farrago and this year myself and a fellow group of Melbourne Media & Comm students started an online Publication called RiffRaff where fellow students can get work published. I’m also a BIG blogger (www.airtomyearth.blogspot.com); I love using mine as an online inspiration board and anther outlet to show my creations, I also love just chilling out and reading what all my other bloggers are posting. In general whether it’s making jewellery, blogging, sewing or writing, in my spare time I’m usually doing something creative. I think it’s also important though to have that time where you just do nothing, I love to sit around and watch movies, or go swimming at the beach-I’m a water baby.
Mister Mode asks If Air To My Earth was a person, describe it’s personality?
A little bit chaotic and wild with an ‘I don’t care’ attitude. But also mysterious, and quite with that odd ability to stand out despite not saying a word.
Mister Mode asks Lastly, what attracted you to Mister Mode and what are you looking forward to the most?
It’s so fantastic that the market is held at night, I love travelling to Asia and searching through the night markets it just adds something extra to the market experience. I also loved the fact that it’s almost like a big celebration of creativity and passion with live music and a bar. I’m really looking forward to all the different types of people that attend, and being able to mingle with fellow creative Melburnians.
